Hello Dental Hygienists!

This year has flown by! It’s hard to believe that my presidency is almost over.  I want to personally thank each and every one of you for giving me the opportunity to serve this year.  It has been an amazing experience!

It’s that time again for our Annual Session!  It will be held at the hotel Vetro in downtown Iowa City, May 4th and 5th.  We not only have a new venue this year but so many other changes that will greatly benefit you!  This year is our first general assembly.  That means, if you’re at annual session, you get to vote on this years proposed resolutions!  Let your voices be heard.  I am so excited to roll this out.  Please join us on this historic Annual Session.  You don’t want to miss out!  Registration is now open.

Kind Regards,

Rachel Pfeifer, RDH, EFDA L2

IDHA President 2017-2018

A special note from your vice president!

This years annual session is at a brand new venue!  Due to the Sheraton hotel in downtown Iowa City being under construction, IDHA had to move their annual session to the Hotel Vetro.  It is time to start making hotel room reservations for Annual Session 2018.  It is VERY important you make your reservation asap if you would like to stay at the Hotel Vetro as it is a much smaller hotel than we are use to.  To make reservations at Hotel Vetro please call 319-337-4961.  Inform the representative you will be staying the IDHA group and they will provide the discounted rate.  If the hotel is full please contact the Hilton Garden Inn located at 328 S. Clinton St, Iowa City, IA 52240. This is within walking distance of Hotel Vetro. There will be no discounted rate at this hotel.

More information about annual session coming soon!

Paging through the November issue of Access Magazine, you will see research conducted by our very own Mary Kelly, RDH, BS, MS. In this article, Mary talks about her work in dental public health and her research on silver diamine fluoride (SDF).

Congratulations to Mary, and thank you for all you do for to provide safe, effective, and professional dental care to the citizens of Iowa.

Letter from the Iowa Dental Board

The 2017 renewal season for dental hygienists begins July 1, 2017. To streamline this process, we will be asking dental hygienists to renew their licenses/local anesthesia permits online this year. Online renewals are automated, and renewal cards will be mailed within 3 to 5 business days. Individuals who elect to apply by paper will receive their renewal cards within 4 to 6 weeks. Please note that renewals cannot be submitted prior to July 1. Read more...

Membership - Your Job and Mine
Every member has a responsibility to approach potential members and ask them to join the association. The number one reason why people don’t join is because no one asked them! It may sound very simple, but it is mostly overlooked. Members can no longer rely on their president or membership chair to “sell” memberships and then sit back and wait for them to roll in. It is true - the more people who join the organization, the stronger the organization. Here is a story about why associations exist and why it is important that all belong. Read on...

Good News! The Older Americans Act Reauthorization of 2016 includes provision for oral health. What does this mean for you and your community?  Read more from the Center or Oral Health here.

"I am originally from Iowa City, after graduation from Kirkwood in May of 2017 I moved to Dubuque where I accepted a Full-Time position at Kuttler Dental.
I have a lot of interests, most of which involve being outdoors (running, hiking, biking, camping, swimming, kayaking, and boating to name a few). I also enjoying watching movies, cooking, the Iowa Hawkeyes and traveling.

My hygiene goals: I plan to go back to school within the next 5 years to obtain a bachelor's in Dental Hygiene and then go on to obtain a Master's because I would eventually like to teach Dental Hygiene."
